Started in 2018 as an offshoot of our summer camp, we are now expanding opportunities for teens to develop social and independent learning skills, leading to inclusion and a higher quality of life for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
EMPOWERING DREAMS !!
The vision of Dreams with Wings is to ensure that children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism can be fully included in the community, achieve personal success, and enjoy a life in the community. Our summer camp program has provided many of these opportunities for children and teens for the past 17 years. Over the last several years, camp surveys from families have indicated a desire for additional programs throughout the year.
Dreams with Wings is providing opportunities for social inclusion, participation in wellness programs, acquisition of independent living skills, and making new friends. Programs will be for individuals who are 13-21 years of age. Each session is tailored to fit the interests and ability levels of our participants, but generally could include games, art projects, light cooking/food preparation, outside activities and/or community explorations. These experiences are used to practice various social and safety skills with our participants, again, at their need and ability level.
(1) Social Group (B.I.G. D.R.E.A.M.S.): Led by clinicians in the Department of Behavior and Learning. These sessions include both direct and indirect learning of social skills/interactions while pursuing participants’ interests and exploring new activities and experiences.
(2) Enrichment Group (Flying Solo): Led by the Teen Educational Coordinator. Programming is geared towards expanding opportunities for teens to develop social and independent learning skills, leading to inclusion and a higher quality of life for participants.
Classes generally meet on alternate weeks so that Dreamers who would like to attend BOTH groups are able to do so.
Costs and Funding
The cost is $20 per session for all programs unless otherwise noted on Program Schedule. There 3 ways to fund the class: (1) Person-pay (via debit/credit card, cash or check), that is reimbursed by some private insurance companies (check with your provider); The Michele P Waiver (as respite); and Program Scholarships (F.E.A.T. and Kosair generously award some partial and full scholarships for individuals to attend our programs). See the Financial Policy and Scholarship Request forms for more information.
